Mr Kevin Van Der Merwe

Kevin was Born in Cape Town in 1968 and grew up in the Eastern Cape town of Gonubie near East London. He is married to Cathy for the past 26 years and has three children. After completing his 2 years SADF National Service he joined the East London Municipal Traffic Department in 1989 and was trained as a Traffic Officer. He served as a traffic officer at various Municipal and Provincial Traffic Department’s and exited the profession in 2007, after nearly two decades, as a Control Provincial Inspector responsible for the training of traffic officers, examiners for driving licences and examiners of vehicles at the Limpopo Department of Transport Traffic Training College at Manenu.

Concurrently during this period he served as a shop steward for IMATU while working for the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality. He also continued as a volunteer member of the SANDF Reserve Force after the integration of forces rising to the rank of major in the infantry and qualifying as a mechanised infantry battalion commander (2009).

Kevin is also qualified as an Examiner of Vehicles, Examiner for Driving Licences and is a SANAS certified Technical Assessor for Certification Bodies. He holds a National Certificate: Occupationally Directed Education Training and Development Practices and a 3-year Diploma in Traffic Science issued under the auspices of the Institute of Traffic, Licensing and Municipal Police Officers of Southern Africa.

He is the co-founder and member of ATL Mobility CC Transport Consultants, which focuses on the procurement of Abnormal Vehicle Exemption Permits and associated services, primarily in the Limpopo Province and North West Province. He is a director of Mpumalanga Transport Consultants (Pty) Ltd in the Mpumalanga Province and Free State Consulting (Pty) Ltd in the Free State Province, which provides similar services.

On 1 September 2020 he was appointed as the Executive Manager: Certification and Operations at the Road Freight Association. On 28 June 2021 Kevin was appointed in terms of Section 5(2)(c)(i) of the Cross-Border Road Transport Act, Act no. 4 of 1998 to the Board of the Cross-Border Road Transport Agency by the Minister of Transport as a Non-Executive Director for a period of 3-years.
