Permits
Overview
The permits issued by regulatory services in accordance with the Cross-Border Road Transport Act allow cross-border operators to conduct road transport business in South Africa and its neighbouring countries.
The C-BRTA offers various types of permits for passenger and freight road transport operators. These are categorised as follows:
- Goods permits
- Bus passenger permits
- Taxi passenger permits
- Tourist passenger permits
- Organised group permits
- Cabotage permits
The agency offers temporary permits as well as long-term permits. Prices differ depending on the type and duration of the permit. Click here to see the permit fees.
Applications can be submitted online or in-person at the C-BRTA offices in Eco Park, Centurion, for processing and approval.
Applicants may pay for permits in cash at the C-BRTA offices, or use bank debit cards, credit cards and bank-guaranteed cheques made out to the C-BRTA.

Reference number: New applicants must use their company identity number if applying under their company name, and their personal identity number if applying as an individual. Existing operators should use their C-BRTA reference or account number.
The postal service is also able to send permits using a speed service (overnight delivery) at a cost of R90, excluding permit fees.
If you are collecting an issued permit on behalf of a permit holder, you need to produce an authorisation letter from the permit holder.
